Eating Disorders and Diet Culture: Inclusive Care for Trans Communities
Presenter: Sand Chang, PhD
2.5 CEs
Homestudy
Abstract
Eating disorders do not discriminate across culture, gender, or socioeconomic status, yet eating disorders assessment and treatment approaches are typically geared toward what has long been considered a "typical" clients with an eating disorders: white, heterosexual, endosex, cisgender, college educated women. These stereotypes and assumptions create enormous barriers for trans people, who are eight times more likely than cisgender people to be diagnosed with eating disorders.
Eating disorders, disordered eating, and body image will be discussed as existing on a spectrum that is deeply embedded in diet culture. We will explore the obsession with body ideals that do not serve the vast majority of the population and are often harmful to trans and nonbinary people and BIPOC.
This is a mixed level course for clinicians who would like to know how to best provide affirming and culturally sensitive care to trans and nonbinary people who face challenges with food and body image. Participants will be invited to explore their unconscious biases through meditation and journaling. The instructor will cover several different approaches to eating disorders assessment and treatment, including varying levels of care, intuitive eating, Health At Every Size (HAES), and Body Trust® frameworks.
Learning Objectives
After this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Challenge unconscious biases with respect to weight and eating disorders, including the ways in which colonialism and diet culture may have informed biases.
- Name two challenges in the assessment and treatment of eating disorders in trans communities, including the roles of sexism, transphobia, and fatphobia.
- Describe two current hypotheses regarding the relationship between gender dysphoria and eating disorders in trans communities.
