Abstract:
How do principles of healthy aging as well as SOGI- (sexual orientation and gender identity) related historical trauma impact LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer) older people? As the US population ages, it is vital for therapists to learn about current best practices in affirmative mental health care for LGBTQ+ older adults. Knowing queer and trans history, and how legislation, world events, and community organizing may have affected individuals coming of age in the mid-20th century is key to working with these community members. Participants of this CE workshop will gain an understanding of caregiving structures and concerns within LGBTQ+ communities, and how those can differ from caregiving in mainstream populations. Finally, we will look at clinical considerations regarding advance planning, end of life, and bereavement among LGBTQ+ older adults and their caregivers, and offer information on social support and other resources available to community members. This CE course includes lecture, vignettes, large group discussion, and Q&A.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Analyze how historical events have contributed to the pathologizing of LGBTQ+ people who grew up in the mid-20th century
- Discuss supportive approaches to LGBTQ+ older adult caregivers and care recipients
- Identify two ways to support LGBTQ+ older adults with end of life considerations
