Course Description

This comprehensive 15-hour course is designed for current and aspiring clinical supervisors in California, fulfilling the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) mandated initial training requirements for supervising Associate Clinical Social Workers (ACSWs), Associate Marriage and Family Therapists (AMFTs), and Associate Professional Clinical Counselors (APCCs).

The curriculum provides a robust foundation in the essential knowledge, skills, and ethical considerations necessary for effective and responsible clinical supervision. Participants will explore critical legal and ethical standards governing supervision, examine various supervisory models, and develop practical techniques for fostering supervisee growth, managing supervisory relationships, and addressing common challenges. The course emphasizes the importance of clinical competency, ethical decision-making, and effective documentation to support both the supervisee's development and the supervisor's professional integrity.

Part 1: Competencies & Responsibilities (5 CEs)

Course Description

This course offers a comprehensive overview of affirmative clinical supervision of associates. We will clarify the multiple roles of an affirmative clinical supervisor, emphasizing expected competencies essential for effective practice and supervisee growth and development. The curriculum explores the dynamics of the supervision relationship, including cultural and contextual considerations that can impact the supervisory relationship. Participants will learn practical systems for effective goal setting, evaluation of the associates work, and tools for providing ongoing feedback.  Further, participants will also learn to assess an associate’s skills in the treatment setting (telehealth or in person), treatment modality (theoretical approach), and use of technology (electronic charts, telehealth offices, HIPAA compliant digital communication). Utilizing lecture, discussion, and vignettes, this course training aims to equip new supervisors with the foundational knowledge and practical guidance necessary to navigate the complexities of affirmative clinical supervision, particularly with either LGBTQIA+ associates or associates working with LGBTQIA+ clients. 

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe at least 3 supervisor roles
  2. Identify  at least 2 key competencies that contribute to effective and ethical supervision
  3. Develop effective systems for goal setting and evaluation 
  4. Describe best practices for documentation for both the supervisor and the supervisee

Part 2: Theory & Practice (6 CEs)

Course Description

This course provides affirmative clinical supervisors with a foundational understanding of the theory and practice of supervising affirmative pre-licensed clinicians. The course will cover the importance of building the supervisor-supervisee relationship and strategies to develop a strong working alliance. We will introduce four supervision models based on competency, treatment (or theoretical orientation), development or an integration. We will also cover the supervisor developmental model, as well as strategies for transition from being a clinician to a clinical supervisor. Through didactic lecture, discussion, and vignettes participants will learn to apply supervision models to their supervision, with an emphasis with either LGBTQIA+ associates or associates working with LGBTQIA+ clients. 

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe at least one strategy for building a strong supervisor-supervisee working alliance
  2. Compare and contrast competency-based model of supervision with the developmental-based model of clinical supervision
  3. Describe at least 2 major models of clinical supervision
  4. Describe the developmental stages of the supervisor 
  5. Describe at least 2 methods for supervisors to assist associates in development of competencies of working with LGBTQIA+ clients
  6. Apply at least 2 strategy for addressing areas of difference in clinical supervision

Part 3: Legal & Ethical Requirements in California 

August 17, 2025

Course Description

This course focuses on legal and ethical obligations of clinical supervisors, with a  focus on supervision of BBS associates (Associate Clinical Social Workers, Associate Marriage and Family Therapists, Associate Profesional Clinical Counselors) in California. We will cover the California Supervision Agreement and other relevant required forms for clinical supervisors. This course will cover critical issues related to supervision, including but not limited to liability, boundaries, informed consent, and confidentiality. This session will use didactic lecture, discussion, and vignettes to support affirmative clinical supervisors to provide supervision to BBS associates following legal requirements and ethical guidelines with an emphasis with either LGBTQIA+ associates or associates working with LGBTQIA+ clients. 

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe at least 3 legal obligations for affirmative clinical supervisors
  2. Describe at least 2 ethical obligations for affirmative clinical supervisors
  3. Complete a Supervision Agreement in compliance with BBS requirements
  4. Utilize the appropriate California forms required for clinical supervision of ACSWs, AMFTs, and APCCs

He has a speciality in working with LGBTQIA+ communities, focused on psychoanalytic psychotherapy transgender and nonbinary adults, identity development, preparing for gender affirming surgery, and pre-verbal trauma.
