Balancing Acceptance & Change with LGBTQIA+ Clients
Presenter: Rachel Jones Linn, MA, LMFT

Abstract
Queer and trans people can experience dichotomous thinking, particularly in today’s polarized political climate targeting these communities. Drawing upon the theoretical framework of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), the course will explore the nuances of dialectical thinking and delve into the complexities faced by queer and trans communities. Participants will develop the capacity to hold dialectics in both the client and therapist, and learn strategies to support clients in finding a middle ground between acceptance and change. One key aspect of the course will address the challenge of working with LGBTQIA+ clients who have unsupportive families. Participants will learn strategies to help clients balance acceptance and change when engaging with their families and staying true to their cultural and social identities. By navigating the intersections of various identities, such as race, religion, gender, and sexuality, participants will learn to work with LGBTQIA+ clients to foster a more compassionate, affirming, and effective therapeutic alliance.

The presenter was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the topics.
I loved the examples of using DBT concepts/interventions. Sometimes DBT feels overly complicated so I liked how practical this was.

I appreciated the work with the family piece which I had never heard or thought about!
