Course Description

In today’s digital age, the internet plays a significant role in shaping the experiences of LGBTQIA teenagers and young adults. While it offers opportunities for connection, self-expression, and support, it also exposes this vulnerable group to potential risks, including cyberbullying, discrimination, and exploitation. During a key time in identity development, affirmative therapists play a vital role in helping LGBTQIA youth navigate these online challenges while fostering a sense of safety and resilience. This live virtual course will use lectures, vignettes, and discussion to explore strategies and interventions that therapists can implement to help LGBTQIA+ teens and young adults stay safe online. The course will emphasize the importance of digital literacy, consider mental health outcomes of screen time, and help therapists create safer spaces in therapy for clients to talk about the ways they spend time online.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to

  1. Discuss the unique online risks faced by LGBTQIA+ teens and young adults, including cyberbullying, harassment, and exploitation
  2. Describe how privacy settings, online boundaries, and digital literacy can support safer online communities for LGBTQIA+ teens and young adults.
  3. Name two clinical interventions to support the identity development of LGBTQIA+ teens and young adults.
