How Critical Race Theory Informs Affirmative Clinical Practice

How Critical Race Theory Informs Affirmative Clinical Practice

Presenter: Claudia Owens Shields, Ph.D.

Date: February 7, 2025

Time: 10am-12pm

2 CEs

This image is intended to depict an old-school Black Christian revolutionary critically examining Christianity, as one of the social structures that is central to racism, cis- and hetero-normativity. The cross draped in the ally flag was inspired by my work specifically with Christian clients who, through our work together, were able to re-imagine God as an ally, which was important to them, as they felt that their faith had been stolen from them.. The broken glass and relatively smaller portion of the stained glass that depicts the trans flag represent the even greater marginalization and hate crimes, which are highest among trans communities. The red black and green earring and afro represent the internalization of revolutionary thought.

Course Description

Presented by an Elder Black Cisgender Hetero Womanist, this workshop reviews a case study, where the “case” is the therapist and her practice.  The therapist, who was born to Black Civil Rights activists, in 1961, on the southside of segregated Chicago, now 61 years later, works with queer clients of color.   Here the presenter, initially an unlikely ally, will describe her own continuing development into an affirmative therapist. Using clinical case material from her own practice, she will demonstrate the use of “self-reflexivity” as a tool for development of clinical understanding and what is sometimes referred to as “multicultural humility.”  She will address issues of “countertransference”, the use of humanistic/existential theory in developing healing relationships, how to dismantle the soul-crushing impact of toxic religion, by integrating critical theories, including critical race theory into practical steps.

Learning Objectives

  1. Discuss how self-reflexivity can be used as a tool to develop clinical understanding
  2. Identify at least one action to take in service of the ongoing development of an affirmative therapy practice.
