Abstract:
Routine and preventative medical care is essential to good health. The ability for mental health providers to rule out any medical concerns early in treatment allows for more accurate mental health diagnoses. LGBTQ+ people delay and avoid medical health care at higher rates than their cisgender and heterosexual counterparts due to medical discrimination, access to medical insurance, and stigma in the community based on hearing about another person’s negative experience. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated many of the problems in LGBTQ+ health care.

LGBTQ+ people face higher rates of medical conditions like HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, anal and breast cancers, heart disease, and injuries from intimate partner violence or suicide attempts. By understanding specific disparities in health outcomes, mental health providers can become better advocates for their clients by healing medical trauma, encouraging medical care, and making appropriate referrals. This course provides affirmative mental health care providers . an increased understanding of the medical system, the red flags of medical discrimination, and the tools needed to to identify affirming primary health care providers. By developing these key skills in coordinating care, clinicians are in a more empowered position to support the whole health of their clients.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the specific forms of prejudice and discrimination LGBTQ+ people may experience in the health care system based on their sexual or gender identities.
  2. Identify common health disparities in sexuality and gender expansive communities.
  3. Apply at least one new intervention to support clients to begin receiving routine and preventative medical health care.

About the presenter:

It was the first of its kind, and he was the first to go through. Through this empowering and rewarding experience he was able to take what I learned from that fellowship and bring it back to San Antonio, TX where he now works at a non-profit organization focusing on LGBTQ Healthcare. This specialty entails primary care, PrEP/PEP, HIV, HRT/GAHT, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, STI screening and treatment and anal cancer screening.
