Course Description

LGBTQIA+ people are at higher risk of long COVID than the general population. People dealing with long term symptoms after a COVID-19 infection are often called long haulers, but it is also called post-COVID conditions (PCC), post-acute COVID-19, or post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC). The symptoms can range wildly from chronic fatigue, low tolerance for stimulating tasks, disorganization and lack of focus, cardiovascular problems, brain fog, GI issues, kidney problems, skin rashes, headaches, anxiety, depression, trauma symptoms and more. Additionally, it can exacerbate existing mental health issues. These symptoms can linger for weeks, months or even years, which can negatively impact quality of life.

Despite this, there is limited research on how mental health professionals can support their patients with long COVID. Failure to assess for long COVID as a possibility for mental health symptoms may delay appropriate treatment. This course will cover risk factors for developing long COVID and how clinicians may be able to address these.  We will cover the impact of the virus on the brain and body and how this may present clinically.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss at least 2 risk factors for long COVID in LGBTQIA+ communities
  2. Discuss at least 2 ways that COVID impacts the brain
  3. Discuss at least 3 ways that mental health professionals can support their LGBTQIA+ clients with long COVID
