Course Description
As current trauma therapies turn their focus to physiological and nervous system responses, teaching clients how to decrease the negative impacts of traumatic experiences has led to an endless variety of voices and ideas about how to explain and treat traumatic symptoms. Both in treatment rooms, and in cultural conversations, many practitioners continue to conceptualize kinky desires as a traumatic response. There are numerous myths about the connection between BDSM and trauma which has left many kinksters feeling stigmatized and misunderstood. Those who do practice kink and have trauma histories are left with little guidance or understanding of how to safely negotiate the fine lines between pleasure and re-traumatization. This training will highlight some of the important science behind trauma and its impacts on the mind and body. We will also cover how individuals wanting to participate in kink can better negotiate scenes, manage trauma triggers and aftercare effectively, and explore reclaiming empowerment while reducing stigma about the intersection of kink and trauma.
Learning Objectives
After participants complete this course they should be able to:
- Define current BDSM/kink practices regarding improvement of safety and consent
- Identify ways to help clients communicate boundaries and needs when negotiating scenes
- Describe 2 therapeutic interventions to support re-traumatization and increased after care needs.
