Course Description
Increasingly children and adolescents are taking the brave step to share insight into themselves with the trusted adults in their lives; it is our responsibility to be good stewards of that trust and support them in effective, ethical and celebratory ways. This training aims to provide clinicians working with transgender, nonbinary, gender queer and gender nonconforming children and adolescents with specific activities and strategies for providing that support and addressing common clinical concerns of these populations.
The training will identify and explore five common areas of clinical concern for these populations: 01) identity insight and development, 02) coping with difficult emotions, 03) decision making, 04) coming out & social coping and 05) family support & education. For each identified area of clinical concern, this training will provide a case example, a reflection activity, a description and demonstration of therapeutic activities and bibliotherapy suggestions. Finally, participants will be presented with 3 case studies and will have the opportunity to collaborate and apply knowledge gained in the training to treatment plan for these different cases.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Identify and describe the five areas of clinical concerns of this population.
- Identify and describe appropriate activities and bibliotherapy suggestions to assist clients with the five areas of clinical concerns
- Evaluate and implement treatment plans that address the five areas of clinical concerns
About the Presenter
Caroline specializes in gender affirming therapy and is passionate about helping people live the lives they want to live. Their practice is rooted in anti-racist and anti-oppression frameworks. She is acutely aware of the systemic, institutional barriers that continue to restrict many people’s access to needed care and as such provides assessments and letters using an informed-consent model for people taking medical and legal steps to affirm their identities. Caroline enthusiastically embraces clients as whole, dimensional people and seeks to hold space for all parts of them to be authentically present.
