Abstract

The World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) is an interdisciplinary professional organization which promotes evidenced-based care, education, research, and public policy related to transgender health. WPATH has been publishing standards of care since 1979 and published the latest version (SOC-8) in Fall 2022. This workshop will cover the latest WPATH guidelines for providing mental health services for transgender and nonbinary (TGNB) clients, including assessment or evaluation for hormonal or surgical interventions during medical transition. Through the discussion of vignettes, participants will learn how to apply the guidelines to complex cases. We will explore ways to use the guidelines as a way to advocate for affirmative health care for TGNB clients with medical providers and insurance companies.

Learning Objectives

  1. Discuss at least 3 of the WPATH SOC 8 guidelines for mental health professionals
  2. Write a letter for gender-affirming medical and surgical treatment using WPATH SOC 8 recommendations
  3. Utilize the WPATH SOC 8 to advocate for services for TGNB clients
