Trauma Informed Yoga Therapy for LGBTQIA+ Clients- Recorded, 4.5 CE Credits

Get to know me: I’m Katie Ziskind, a holistic LMFT. I am the owner of Wisdom Within Counseling in CT. We specialize with children, teens, and young adults and teach confidence skills using art, yoga, animals, and outdoor walking sessions. In my free time, I love doing yoga and relaxing with my three kitties.

What does affirmative psychotherapy mean to me?

Affirmative psychotherapy means that no matter what color someone’s skin, no matter their sexual orientation, gender, or gender expression, I proudly choose to accept, love, and offer a judgment free, safe space. We all feel sadness, loss, jealousy, pain, and of course, happiness. I love helping my clients love being themselves while also working through these challenging emotions. Often, these emotions are intensified due to shame and guilt around LGBTQIA+ related issues.

What populations do I work with? What is my level of expertise (friendly, knowledgeable, expert) for each of those populations?

I often work with children, teens, and young adults. However, when I worked at a local community mental health agency, I co-led teen safe space groups and adult safe space groups. The adult safe place group consisted of trans adults transitioning. Currently, I have non-binary, trans, and LGBTQIA+ children and teens on my caseload. I also supervise clinicians as they work with clients in the LGBTQIA+ community on goals.

What is my approach to healing?

My approach to healing is based on self-care, nurturing, soothing the nervous system, and offering safety. I also am holistic and creative. Many families find us in Connecticut because they want positive coping skills rather than medication. I use creative art, painting, yoga, breathing, poses, animals, and outdoor therapies in my treatment approach. These offer options in more ways than just words for a frustrated teenager to feel a connection to themselves. I teach self-care strategies for anxiety and outlets and meditations for anger. I love personalizing therapy and being a group owner now teach holistic therapy!

What issues am I most skilled at addressing as a mental health professional?

ADHD, PTSD/trauma responses, self-harm, cutting, eating disorders, anorexia, bulimia, break ups, relationships, sef-worth, self-value, sexual abuse, chronic physical pain, lifestyle changes, children’s issues, teen issues, and young adult issues, anxiety, depression
