Abstract

Sexuality and sexual pleasure are important parts of transgender and non-binary client’s lives. Providing holistic mental health care includes conversations about sexual health, sexual identity, sexual behavior, and bodies. For trans and non-binary folx, sexuality has the potential for great pain and exploitation, but also great pleasure and exploration. This liminal space—when nourished outside of cis-sexist culture—creates opportunities to explore, build, and create new ways of being and understanding.  This workshop provides tools for exploring sexual ethics, talking with trans clients about sex that moves away from pathologizing models, while empowering and upliftings clients, and centering trans people.

In this workshop, participants will explore the possibilities of trans and pleasure-centered sex therapy. Principles from narrative, relational, and social justice frameworks will be explored for working with erotically marginalized clients. Through lecture, reflection exercises, and case examples, participants will be invited to dig deeply into their own sexual and gender narratives and leave with valuable tools which can be applied in their professional work with transgender and non-binary clients.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify how their own relationship to desire and desire-ability impacts treatment when working with trans and non-binary clients
  • Discuss their own stance of ethical curiosity when providing trans-centered care
  • List three clinical interventions that they can use when talking about sex with clients
