Abstract: Cognitive hypnotherapy is an innovative, evidence-based multimodal treatment that can be used to address a myriad of mental health issues. This modality incorporates techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), hypnotherapy, and mindfulness. Black* gay men have long faced discrimination, rejection, fear, violence and revictimization, religious intolerance, economic and criminal injustice. They deal not only with systemic racism, but also homophobia. As a result, Black gay men are more likely to experience mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation. While many therapeutic models can be effective in working with this population, cognitive hypnotherapy is increasingly becoming known as a particularly salient treatment. Utilizing a vignette of a Black gay man dealing with severe depression, the training will detail a step-by-step 16-week process of providing cognitive hypnotherapy to illustrate how this modality can be adapted for working with this population.

*Although the the terms may have different implications for different people, “African-American” and “Black” are used here interchangeably.

After participating in this training, learners will be able to:

  • Describe two positive effects of cognitive hypnotherapy as a treatment modality for African-American gay men.
  • Briefly describe the early, middle, and late stages of the 16-week process of providing cognitive hypnotherapy.
