Mono-Poly Relationships in Therapy

Abstract

Relationships in which one person is monogamous and another person is polyamorous – commonly referred to as mono-poly relationships – are often deemed to be one of the most difficult relationship configurations possible. This may be due to how the mono-poly relationship begins, or due to how each person sees their own future in the relationship, or the fact that they each may want their relationship to operate differently. Many mono-poly dynamics can be healthy and happy, while others can feel harmful to one or more people. Clinicians who are working with consensually non-monogamous communities are bound to eventually work with clients who have a mono-poly relationship structure.

This course will provide foundational knowledge about working with mono-poly relationship structures. It will introduce the different ways mono-poly relationships may come about, as well as establish relevant terminology and concepts for this community. This course will help psychotherapists identify and assist clients who are navigating common dynamics within this relationship configuration. Participants will learn about the relationship orientation spectrum, discuss therapeutic tools for a mono-poly couple, and explore common clinical considerations for a mono-poly relationship through drawing on family systems theories and attachment theory. The course will be a mix of lecture and discussion, drawing on real-world de-identified case examples.

Learning Objectives

After participants complete this course, they should be able to:

  • Identify at least three reasons clients may be in a mono-poly relationship dynamic.
  • Discuss the relationship orientation spectrum and define two orientations on the spectrum.
  • Identify the three main components of differentiation of self, and assess whether each partner in a mono-poly relationship is able to interact in a differentiated way.
