Abstract
LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, etc.) clients are subject to minority stressors, which are often experienced as trauma. An evidence-based practice that can address the effects of this is yoga therapy, which involves mind, body, and spirit, and entails mindfulness, movement, and healing touch to provide traumatized clients with a sense of control. This course comprises an overview of the principles of yoga therapy, and will cover basic techniques to supplement traditional talk-based psychotherapy for LGBTQIA+ clients of all ages presenting with PTSD and other trauma-related issues. Guided meditations, movement/poses, and healing touch as interventions to enhance psychotherapy sessions with LGBTQIA+ clients will be discussed. Therapists will learn about breathing techniques that can soothe the parasympathetic nervous system that can be activated by living in a homo-, bi-, and transphobic society. The seven chakras will be covered in detail as they relate to LGBTQIA+ mental health. An overview of nutrition guidelines and their impact on mood and wellness is included. Principles of Ayurveda, such as the doshas and koshas, are covered, and case examples of how to apply these to LGBTQIA+ clients are provided.
