Kink-Aware Therapy: Consent and Negotiation

Get to know Rachel Gombos, MSW, LISW:

I am a licensed independent social worker, working in NW Ohio treating anxiety, trauma, as well as relationship distress related to sex I am proud to identify as a LGBTQIA+, CNM, and kink affirmative therapist.

What does affirmative psychotherapy mean to me?
To me, affirmative psychotherapy not only means being knowledgeable regarding LGBTQIA+, CNM and kink, it also means actively dismantling the systems within the mental health community and stigma present that lends itself realistic fear of services and a lack of representation.

What populations do I work with? What is my level of expertise (friendly, knowledgeable, expert) for each of those populations?
I am an expert at working with clients who struggle with anxiety as well as those that have a history of trauma including issues related to sex after sexual trauma. I am also an expert at working persons actively in or seeking a BDSM (using it as an umbrella term here) dynamic. Additionally, I am knowledgeable at working with consensually non-monogamous couples and sexuality and gender-expansive individuals.

What is my approach to healing?
I believe that connections with other people are essential to healing; creating meaningful relationships with others, yourself and your inner world is restorative and invaluable. My approach focuses on a tool box of theories and interventions as well as coordination with my clients.

What issues am I most skilled at addressing as a mental health professional?
Largely I work with clients that have experienced a history of trauma including childhood, sexual trauma and attachment injuries in relationships. I am most skilled at utilizing a mixture of Emotion Focused Therapy, Prolonged Exposure therapy and I believe in the power of psychoeducation aimed at helping clients understand their experience from behavior activation to neurological processes.
