Abstract:

LGBTQIA+ addiction is disproportionately prevalent and unique from endosex-hetero-cisgender addictions. Destructive behaviors in the LGBTQIA+ population range from alcohol and substance abuse to disordered eating, sex/love/abuse/porn addiction, and even high-risk or criminal behaviors. LGBTQIA+ people face unique challenges when seeking recovery from addictive substances and behaviors. Affirmative clinicians benefit from an understanding of the relationship between minority stressors and trauma in order to provide affirming care. In this course, we will explore unique causes for LGBTQIA+ people as well as the unique manners of use. We will discuss the perpetuating role of LGBTQIA+ culture as well as how our clients may move through the phases of change. Finally, we will explore therapeutic adjustments to enable better outcomes in cessation and sustainable recovery. The influences of internalized homo-/trans-/bi-phobias and intersectionality with racism, misogyny and socio-economic oppression will be discussed. We will examine prevalence, predispositions, identifying factors, relapse support, vulnerabilities in recovery, and a multitude of interventions including awareness of triggering situations and people, learning how to use social support, integration of the “good” and “bad” self, finding focus on motivation over problem resolution, and exploring pre-lapse and recovery from relapse. You will be provided with a toolkit of practical guides, psychoeducational models of recovery and change, and client worksheets. Application of these principles will be explored through case examples.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Identify at least 2 unique factors influencing LGBTQIA+ predisposition to addictive behaviors
  • Identify at least 2 supportive factors in sustainable recovery
  • Describe at least 2 signs and symptoms of unacknowledged addiction
  • Utilize at least 2 interventions for motivating a decision for cessation and recovery
